CachePie and the Hidden Treasure | Kids' Geocaching Story
High in a gum tree, as the sun came up, a magpie stretched his wings and sang a happy song.
Warble-warble-wheee!
His name was CachePie, and he loved one thing more than anything else: treasure hunting!
🎵 Listen to the CachePie song:
Other magpies collected shiny things like bottle tops, foil and sparkly spoons.
But CachePie didn't care about shiny things. He collected something much better: adventures!
And his favourite adventure of all was geocaching.

CachePie packed his trusty brown satchel.
"Notebook? Check! Pencils? Check! GPS? Check!"
His GPS beeped. Beep-beep! It showed a secret spot hidden somewhere in the park.
"Let's go!" said CachePie.
Hop, hop, hop went CachePie, past the playground and over the little wooden bridge.
"Warmer… warmer…" he whispered, watching the arrow on his screen.

He peeked under a bench. Only a sleepy lizard.
"Sorry, Mr Lizard!" giggled CachePie.
He looked inside a hollow log. Only a pile of crunchy leaves.
Beep-beep-BEEP! went the GPS.
"I'm right on top of it!" CachePie said. He looked up, he looked down, he looked all around.
Then he spotted a pile of rocks that looked just a tiny bit too neat.
Carefully, CachePie lifted the top rock. Underneath was a little green box!
"I found it!" he cheered, flapping his black-and-white wings so fast that feathers flew.

Inside the box was a tiny logbook full of names from people who had found it before.
CachePie took out his pencil and wrote in his very best writing:
Found it! — CachePie
Something glinted in the bottom of the box: a sparkly button.
"Ooh, shiny!" a passing magpie would have said.
But CachePie just smiled and left it where it was. He was looking for something far more exciting.
And there it was: a small metal tag with a special code.
"A trackable!" CachePie gasped. "It travels from cache to cache, all around the world!"
A note on the tag said: Please help me visit the beach!
"I'll take you on your next adventure," CachePie promised, tucking the trackable safely into his satchel.
Then he closed the box tight and put it back exactly where he'd found it, under the neat pile of rocks.
"Now the next explorer can find it too," he said.
On his way home, CachePie saw a chip packet blowing across the grass.
"Litter in my park? Not today!"
He tucked it into his satchel to put in the bin. Good geocachers always leave a place nicer than they found it.
Just then, a little girl and her dad came walking by, looking at a phone.
"We're looking for a cache," said the girl. "But we can't find it."
CachePie smiled. He didn't tell them where it was, because that would spoil the fun.
Instead, he gave them a hint: "Look for rocks that are a bit too tidy!"
Soon they heard a happy shout from across the park.
"WE FOUND IT!"
CachePie warbled his loudest, proudest song. Warble-warble-WHEEE!
That night, back in his gum tree, CachePie looked at the little trackable under the moon.
Tomorrow they would go to the beach, then it would travel on to a new home and a new adventure.
"The best treasure," he whispered sleepily, "isn't shiny at all. It's the adventure… and sharing it with friends."
